What is Acupuncture?

Acupuncture works to help maintain your body's equilibrium. It involves the insertion of very fine needles into specific points on the body to regulate the flow of qi, your body's vital energy. For a number of lifestyle and environmental reasons, qi can become disturbed, depleted, or blocked, which can result in some symptoms of pain and illness. In certain instances, traditional acupuncture can be an effective therapy to help restore balance and promote physical and emotional harmony.

Treatment is aimed at the root of your condition as well as your main symptoms. This approach helps with resolving your problem and enhancing your feeling of wellbeing.

You may notice other niggling problems resolve as your main health complaint improves.

Acupuncture originated in China and other far eastern cultures where it still features in mainstream healthcare, both as a stand-alone therapy and in combination with conventional western medicine. Acupuncture is now widely used and accepted all over the world. In the UK more and more people are finding out what acupuncture can do for them.

Who has acupuncture?

Many people come to acupuncture for help with specific symptoms or to relieve specific pains like osteoarthritis of the knee. Some use acupuncture because they feel generally unwell but have no obvious diagnosis. Others choose acupuncture simply to enhance their feeling of wellbeing. Acupuncture is considered suitable for all ages including babies and children. It can be used effectively alongside conventional medicine.

What can it do for me?

Some people turn to acupuncture for help with a specific symptom or condition. Others choose to have treatment to help maintain good health, as a preventive measure, or simply to improve their general sense of wellbeing. Because traditional acupuncture aims to treat the whole person rather than specific symptoms in isolation, it can be effective for a range of conditions.

Remember that acupuncturists treat the person, not just the condition which they have, so each patient's treatment plan will be different. However, you can always ask your practitioner about other patients' experiences, to give you an idea of what to expect. Many people return to acupuncture again and again because they find it so beneficial and relaxing.

In 2009 the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE) recommended that acupuncture should be made available on the NHS, as a cost-effective short-term treatment for the management of early, persistent non-specific lower back pain.

You can get more information on current scientific research into the effectiveness of acupuncture by visiting acupuncture.org.uk or by speaking to a BAcC-registered acupuncturist.

What is the Buteyko Technique?

Buteyko (pronounced Bu-tay-ko) is most commonly used as a treatment for many conditions, including:

  • Asthma
  • Rhinitis
  • Panic Attacks
  • Bronchitis
  • Sinusitis
  • COPD
  • Hyperventilation

It was developed in Russia in the 1950s by a Russian doctor called Konstantin Buteyko, from whom the technique gets its name.  In 1981 the Russian authorities officially recognised the method as beneficial and approved it for use as a treatment for asthma throughout the former Soviet Union. Very few practitioners exist in the west, but numbers are growing.

Word of the technique eventually spread to western countries such as Australia and New Zealand where practitioners have already built up 10-15 years experience of using the method. The results of three scientific trials in the west have shown that asthma sufferers using the Buteyko system were able to significantly reduce their need for reliever inhalers.

Buteyko depends almost entirely on your own commitment to make yourself well.  Like so many other areas of life what you get out of Buteyko is related to what you are prepared to put in.

Buteyko practitioners work as teachers, guiding you through learning the breathing exercises and advising you on how best to manage your condition.  However, without the dedication to practise by yourself you are much less likely to see improvements in your health.  The good news is that by following the exercise programme the majority of people will be noticing a significant improvement in their condition within a couple of weeks. Weekly sessions for 5 weeks are advised, although fewer for some patients.

The breathing techniques themselves are not physically demanding. In fact the majority of the programme is carried out sitting comfortably in a chair.  However it is usual for practitioners to focus on physical fitness as well and encourage their clients to take some form of regular daily exercise.

Most people with asthma recognise that stress and emotion can play a part in bringing on an attack and therefore learning to relax forms an important part of Buteyko training

As a result of learning Buteyko you may find that you can:

  • Sleep better
  • Reduce medication (After consulting your GP)
  • Increase exercise
  • Snore less
  • Breathe more easily
  • Control panic attacks
  • Stop persistent coughs

Articles about the Buteyko technique have recently featured on Richard and Judy, in The Sunday Telegraph, and Woman's Weekly.

Suzanne Cooper Lic Ac, MBAcC has been trained by the Buteyko Breathing Association.

What is Cupping?

Cupping is a traditional therapy, used to ease pain and stiffness.

Recently publicised by Gwyneth Paltrow, cupping is a traditional treatment which has been practised for thousands of years, mainly in the East, but also in parts of Europe. Glass cups are used to create a partial vacuum over the skin, bringing fresh blood and qi to the area, so moving the stagnation responsible for pain and stiffness. It is also used in the early stages of common cold, drawing out impurities.
